Everyone wants to look good.
Fact.
And one way to look good, is
to look sexy.
Forget your naughty
preconceptions about sexy being just the way you dress or move. Being sexy is
about confidence, empowerment, holding your head high and being proud of
yourself. That can all come from many things (beauty, work, figure,
intelligence, career, level 101 on Crush Candy) but if it doesn't come
naturally, the good news is that it can also be learnt! The Diva class is more than
just a dance class where you are taught some steps. Oh no siree, Instructor
Madeleine focuses on posture, attitude and s.t.y.l.e. It doesn't matter if the
move is not exact, we're told, as long as you make it look GOOD! And she
certainly looked damn good. So I tried. Arguably I failed (first class, come
on) but I felt pretty good trying and I figure that's the main point for now.
The class started with a
very basic how-to-look-bet stance - hips side on to audience/mirror, turning
upper body round to face audience and hands on hips (tight-pursed lips),
thereby appearing slimmer and showing off your lady curves. Simple, yet
effective (although by the end of the class, I had forgotten to stand like that
in the photo, darnit!). After a mini mini routine as warm-up, with lots of
finger tracing along one arm, down the body, up the leg, sexy stances and turns
(it's much sexier than I'm making it sound), we moved onto the main routine.
If I imagined a diva dance
routine before, I would be thinking hair flicks, sultry poses, a cross between
Chicago-style moves, Beyonce and Shakira's She-Wolf video. And it was! The
moves themselves broken down were not too complicated to learn, but what was
tricky was the speed, making the moves clear and performing them with attitude.
I also wore heels for the class -
heels are encouraged by Instructor Madeleine but when we were running
through the routine by the end, I took them off - wearing heels looks great
when stationary but made the dancing (balance, turns) infinitely harder so I
was advised to try without for a while (in future, I would start the class
without and then wear heels at the end). The routine we learnt is linked below
(from about 0.27-0.47) – maybe not quite what I looked like but anyway.
Instructor Madeleine was a
perfect teacher for this class. She looks great, moves well and inspires you to
learn. But also, she is encouraging and, without wanting to make it sound like
an AA meeting, creates a safe space so you feel like you can give it your best,
pout in the mirror and be as sexy as you can without embarrassment. Some in the
class were regulars, which meant they picked up the moves a lot faster and were
quite good already but don’t be afraid! It was still a very friendly class and
there’s not need to feel self conscious in the slightest. You can go forth and
let your full inner Diva out!
